PETALING JAYA: Two more bodies of Indonesian construction workers were recovered from the rubble of the collapsed Jaya Supermarket building in Section 14 here, bringing the death toll to four.



They were identified as Muhammed Maskur, 31, and 38-year-old excavator operator Anwarudin.

Muhammed’s body was found pinned under a concrete slab in the car park at 3.30am yesterday while that of Anwarudin, who was trapped under the excavator, was pulled out two hours later.

On Thursday, the body of 53-year-old AlSuki Nahru was found together with another victim who could not be identified as only the bottom half of the body was recovered.

The two men pulled out of the rubble alive on Thursday have been identified as Sale, 48, and Suryano, 32. It is learnt that Muhammed was Suryano’s younger brother.

Petaling Jaya police chief Asst Comm Arjunaidi Mohamed said the search and rescue operation would continue round the clock to locate the three remaining victims buried under the rubble.

Rescue personnel are also using a tracker dog unit and a scope camera in the search, he said, adding that there was no new information on more victims.

The 541 search and rescue team personnel were from the police, Fire and Rescue Department, Civil Defence Department, Petaling Jaya City Council and Special Malaysia Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team.

On Thursday, the five-storey portion of the supermarket building collapsed right to the basement, where the car park was located, during demolition work.

A 10-storey office block at the other end of the building was not affected in the 5pm incident.

Indonesian Embassy minister counsellor (information, social and culture) Widyarka Ryananta, who visited Sale and Suryano at the University Malaya Medical Centre said he would get details of all victims of the incident and contact their family members, adding that the recovered bodies would be sent to Indonesia.

Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha, who visited the site yesterday, said rescue work was being hampered by the large amount of debris.

“I would like an explanation from the contractor involved in the demolition on the methods the company used,” he said, warning that stern action would be taken if there had been negligence.

“I am going to put in a working paper on this incident. A task force comprising the local council, police and Fire and Rescue Department will also be formed to probe the collapse,” he said, adding that demolition work and the new mall was approved in July 2007.

National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said the incident was a stark reminder on why safety at the workplace should not be taken for granted.

“It is sad that it takes another tragedy for people to realise what will happen if one takes safety at the workplace for granted.

“Proper risk assessment is the most fundamental issue of commitment to safety,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Sam Worthington is the next Australian star to take Hollywood by storm.

FAME is going to hit Sam Worthington hard, but he seems unfazed by its approach.

If you’re going, “Sam, who?”, well, you won’t be saying that for long. Not after you watch the Aussie actor’s performance as Marcus Wright in the one of summer’s biggest and most-anticipated film, Terminator Salvation.

And he may not be a household name yet, but Worthington’s already being hailed as Australia’s newest breakout star and the Next Big Thing in Hollywood.

“That’s everyone else’s opinion!” said Worthington at The Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles in early May, when press interviews were conducted in conjunction with the show’s release.

“As far as I’m concerned, I’m hoping my job’s okay and I get another job,” said the 33-year-old actor.

But Worthington already has “other jobs”. After nearly stealing the show from Christian Bale in Terminator Salvation (though some believe he already has), he’s James Cameron’s leading man in the upcoming US$200mil 3D extravaganza Avatar, and he’s going to be Perseus in the 2010 flick Clash of the Titans. In fact, he’s been working back to back on movies for the past four years and has had only three weeks off since then.

But he’s still concerned that he could “stuff it up”.

“Any actor fears unemployment – even at this level. That fear drives you to keep working and doing the best you can do,” he said.

“I’ve just got to make sure (fame) doesn’t affect my work, and if my work is 100% committed and the characters are truthful and people feel sympathy and empathy for them, then I’m on the right track,” he said.

In Terminator Salvation, Bale stars as John Connor, before becoming leader of the Resistance, and Worthington stars as Marcus Wright, a cyborg who believes he is human. The movie also introduces a young version of the first film’s hero, Kyle Reese, played by Anton Yelchin. Set in 2018, Salvation focuses on the war between humanity and Skynet.



It may seem as if Worthington came out of nowhere to become Hollywood’s Next Big Thing, but the actor has been building himself a solid resume for 10 years, acting in movies and television shows in his native Australia before fate landed him a leading role in James Cameron’s ultra-secretive movie.

Cameron picked Worthington after watching his audition tape from a pool of hundreds of actors. “Legend” has it that the director then recommended Worthington to McG for a role in Terminator Salvation.

Curiously, no one could confirm that story – not even Worthington, who met McG a year into filming Avatar.

“I don’t think Jim (James Cameron) recommended me because he was so busy working on Avatar, but I think McG would’ve asked him, ‘What is Sam Worthington like’?” he said, acknowledging, however, that Avatar has opened doors for him in Hollywood.

Perhaps Bale is one of the reasons why Worthington is on Terminator Salvation.

“I did really push for Sam to play Marcus because he’s an excellent actor,” Bale revealed.

No matter who Worthington owes his current “in-demand status” to, it would seem that fortune is on his side – like how it was on the day he decided to accompany his girlfriend for an audition at a drama school to “cheer her on”.

Worthington, then 19, ended up getting in while she didn’t make the cut!

“She ended up dumping me a week later. Well, that was the end of that relationship,” he said wryly.

Back then, Worthington was a bricklayer from Perth who never even thought of becoming an actor.

“I didn’t know what wings on a stage were; I thought Chekhov was on the Star Trek Enterprise – I didn’t realise he wrote plays!” he said, referring to Russian playwright Anton Chekhov.

But he managed to stick to it for three years – he won a scholarship to the John Curtin School of Performings Arts in Fremantle, West Australia, and then studied acting at the National Institute of Dramatic Art in Sydney. When he graduated in 1998, he went on to build himself an acting career in Australia, snagging roles in movies such as Bootmen (2000) and Gettin’ Square (2003) with Lord Of The Rings alumni David Wenham, as well as television shows such as Love My Way.

He went on to win, in 2004, the Australian Film Institute (AFI) Award for Best Lead Actor for his role in the movie Somersault.

He also had small parts in Hollywood movies such as Hart’s War (2002) and The Great Raid (2005), and was even considered for the role of James Bond before Daniel Craig was picked.

“I’ve always thought you should make as many movies as you can in your home country so when you come over to this field (Hollywood) you have something to offer. When you sit in the same room as James Cameron all starry-eyed – and think this is fantastic and cool – then you’re never gonna get the job, you know?” he said.

He considers his time in Australia “an apprenticeship”, and that his 10 years of experience have enabled him to “play with the big boys”.

Worthington is the latest addition to a long line of Australian actors making it big in Hollywood, joining the likes of actors such as Hugh Jackman, Naomi Watts, Russell Crowe, Nicole Kidman, Cate Blanchett and Isla Fisher.

“We travel 15 hours to get to (the United States), so we’re not going to waste our time or their time,” he said wryly.

“The background (Australian actors) have is one where we do many jobs – theatre, films and TV – all to pay the bills. We’re pretty rooted to the ground. We know that it’s a job and we’re here to tell good stories,” he added.

Fame may be coming his way, but as far as Worthington’s concerned, he’s not going to let the allure and fanfare of Hollywood get to him.

“All that star stuff is all fluff. It’s tinsel,” he said at one point.

He is just an Aussie bloke who, if he had a choice, would rather “sit and have a beer” than pump iron at the gym to pad muscle for his next role.

“I think the world changes, you don’t change,” he said. “I’m gonna go along for the ride. I can’t really ask anyone for advice about what to do, so I just have to make sure my work stays strong – that’s the reason why I’m here,” he said.

Worthington speaks

On working with Christian Bale:
“You’re working with probably the most dynamic actor of his generation, so you better have all your homework done,” Sa m Worthington said.

“The guy’s very giving as an actor, and you’re only as good as the person you’re acting opposite and he makes you better.”

About the crazy things he had to do while filming Terminator Salvation:
“I had to roll in the mud naked, got napalmed, shot in the head. There was this explosion, and they said, ‘Can you exit camera left?’ And when the explosion went off I hit the deck and kind of cried. That was a big explosion!”

About John Connor and Marcus Wright:
“(John Connor and Marcus Wright) arelike runaway trains and they’re both ready to smash into each other.

They’re both two of the same halves – or brothers – on this mission with a common belief. To me, the movie’s about three men – Marcus Wright, John Connor and Kyle Reese – and (how) these guys are learning how to become men in these unforgiving times,” he said.

In a strange way, he relates to his character,a man who, before regaining consciousness in a bomb-blasted, Terminator-infested planet Earth in 2018, remembers being put to death in prison.

“I’m an Australian guy who is pretty down-to-earth, who is entering this bizarre world where your heads are on billboards and everyone is get to know who you are. It’s two different worlds clashing there,” he said.

About asking for James Cameron’s blessings:
Worthington actually approached Cameron, who directed The Terminator (1984) and Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991), to tell him that the producers of Terminator Salvation were considering him for a role.

“And I asked him, ‘So, what do you think?’ and he said: ‘Don’t f*** it up and get back to work on Avatar,’” said Worthington, chuckling.

About Avatar:
“I play a former marine in a wheelchair who goes to another planet to drive remote-controlled bodies (that has) alien DNA mixed with his DNA. He’s a guy who can’t walk in a body that can walk – what are the pressures involved with that? And he’s going to invade these inhabitants on this amazing planet that Jim (Cameron) has created,” he said.

Worthington, who calls James Cameron “one of his best friends” loves working with the director. He had to work with Cameron for six months before getting the role and later spent 13 months filming Avatar. (Apparently, Worthington will be in every scene of the movie.)

“He’s still filming. He’ll keep fi lming till they pull him away!” he said, laughing out loud.

“He loves making movies. He took you to the Titanic, and now he’s going to take you to outerspace,” he said.

Avatar is going to be tentatively released in December this year.

About Clash of the Titans:
Worthington dons a short skirt (okay, a short tunic) to play Greek hero Perseus, who goes on a dangerous mission to defeat the god of the underworld, Hades.

The cast filmed in exotic locations such as Canary Island of Tenerife, and filming will stop in August. (The movie is tentatively going to be released in March next year). They are filming many of the big action scenes first, said Worthington.

“We took on the Medusa, and we took on the witches – in the first two weeks! Then we’re going to take on some scorpions and then the Kraken.

“And then hopefully I’ll get to speak. At the moment it’s a lot of “Arrrggh!”, which isn’t that hard!”

By Larry Carroll: A day after she was badly injured in a treadmill accident, the 4-year-old daughter of Mike Tyson has died.



Multiple sources are reporting that Exodus Tyson was pronounced dead at 11:45 a.m. local time on Tuesday following a brief period on life support. The daughter of the former world boxing champion was injured on Monday at the family’s home in Phoenix.

Tyson’s daughter was discovered by her 7-year-old brother Monday with a cable from the machine wrapped around her neck. After the girl’s mother took her off the cable and called authorities, she was transported to a local hospital. The 42-year-old Tyson traveled from Las Vegas to Phoenix on Monday to be with his daughter.

“We are grateful for the tremendous outpouring of love and prayers from all over the world,” Tyson said in a statement released to the media. “There are no words to describe the tragic loss of our beloved Exodus. We ask you now to please respect our need at this very difficult time for privacy to grieve and try to help each other heal.”

Although the youngest world heavyweight champion in history retired from professional boxing in 2005, Tyson has been quite visible lately. Currently in theaters is “Tyson,” a probing documentary that aims to explore the troubled sports legend. He also has a high-profile cameo in the upcoming comedy “The Hangover,” due in theaters next month.

While speaking with MTV News recently about the films, Tyson opened up about his relationship with his children.

“I look forward to having some grandkids one day,” he said. “And I’m really trying to work into re-creating my relationship, rebuilding my relationship with my children. [In the past I was so wrapped up in being] this Mike Tyson, ‘Iron Mike,’ heavyweight champion of the world or whatever I was, that I neglected my children and people I was in love with at one time. And I’m bearing the brunt of it right now. At this stage in my life, I’m starting to feel the pain and the effects from it, and I would like to rekindle that relationship.”

A heartfelt Tyson also said that even if the allure of fame came on as strong as it once did, his love for Exodus had changed his priorities. “I would give all that [fame] up if it caused me losing what I have now: That little condo with my girlfriend and my daughter and having a relationship with the rest of my kids.”

PETALING JAYA: The abandoned Jaya Supermarket in Section 14 here collapsed after demolition operations went awry on Thursday evening.

Part of the four-storey building, a landmark of the city, collapsed at about 4:45pm, trapping nine Indonesian construction workers. Others working at the site managed to escape.

The Fire and Rescue Department received a distress call at 5:08pm and about 50 firemen immediately rushed to the scene.

Selangor Fire and Rescue Department director Soiman Jahid said the first worker was pulled out of the rubble at 5:45pm and followed by the second about fifteen minutes later.

The two injured victims Suriono, 31, and Salleh, 45 were sent to the University of Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC).

Rescue workers also recovered the body of a construction worker at 6:44pm.

Petaling Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Arjunaidi Mohamed said Suriono was admitted to the emergency ward while Salleh received outpatient treatment.

“The dead victim has been identified as Maskor, 28,” he said at a press conference at the scene.

He said that six more construction workers were still trapped under the debris.



“We are working on the assumption that they are still alive. The search and rescue operation will continue untill all are accounted for,” he said.

A resident living nearby earlier said he had heard trapped workers shouting “Tolong, tolong (Help, help)” for a while, but there was only silence now.

One trapped worker apparently managed to call his boss on his handphone, and rescue workers are trying to trace him.

By nightfall, an operations centre had been set up and spotlights were used to help with the rescue efforts.

Soiman said the rescue operation involves over 150 personnel from his department, police, the Civil Defence Department, Petaling Jaya City Council and others.

“We are using the tracker dogs to search for the remaining victims,’’ he added.

The building has six storeys, including two basement levels. Most of the workers were on the ground and third floors when the incident, whose cause is currently unknown, occurred.

At one stage, the remaining part of the building was teetering dangerously, reporters on the scene said, with bits and pieces still falling off.

However, the Fire and Rescue Department has confirmed that there are no houses nearby and residents were not in danger.

Lucky survivors
An Indonesian worker Mohamad Iksan, 25, who was carrying out drilling operations in the basement, said he ran out immediately after some concrete slabs fell on the ground not far from him.

“Luckily I was near open space and managed to escape. I only realised part of the building had collapsed after I ran out of the building,” he said.

He said he was working with about eight colleagues during the incident and most of them were at the basement and the highest floor.

Andi, 30, who was on the fifth floor of the building, was taking a break with nine other construction workers when the incident happened.

“I was sitting down when I heard the loud sound of wind rushing past. Then the floor started tilting and we just ran for our lives.

“We rushed to the other end of the building. We are lucky to be alive,” said Andi, who had just started working on the construction site 20 days ago.

Rojak seller Faizal Md Yusof, 25, who was at his van nearby, saw the building “goyang” (sway) and then collapse.

“I saw six cranes falling down along with the building. I just left my van and ran for my life,” he said.

His van was located less than 50m from the collapsed building.

Store manager Lee, 37, said she heard loud booming sounds and looked out of her shoe shop to witness the building collapse.

“There is usually some noise from the construction. When I heard the loud noise, I knew something big fell but I never thought that the whole building would collapse,” she said.

PETALING JAYA: Her relatives noticed the scars on the boy’s head three years ago and her colleagues at a music school saw bruises on his face all the time. When they confronted the single mother, she just brushed it off saying her five-year-old son was naughty and was always falling down.

However, the truth came out on Tuesday when Welfare Department officers rescued the boy and took him to the Serdang Hospital.

He had so many injuries that doctors who examined him were taken aback as there was barely a spot on the body that had no scars.



A relative finally alerted the department after being encouraged to do so by a Starprobe team that had been following the case for the past few days.

On Tuesday, at about 11.30am, reporters from The Star stationed outside the family home in Puchong alerted the welfare officers that the mother and child were at home. A department team came about an hour later.

The Starprobe team was able to witness the rescue first hand as the officers used the soft approach to convince the mother to allow them to take the child.



After two hours, the tearful mother finally relented but she kept on shouting at her son who was also crying.

It took the officers some time to persuade the boy to get into their car to get to the hospital.

Medical staff confirmed bruises, cane marks, cuts and swellings on the boy which they said were not self-inflicted.

The boy later told the welfare and medical officers that his mother had beaten him and that it had been going on for a long time.

It was learnt that the mother had a “complicated life” and was now divorced from the boy’s father who had never helped raise the child.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama on Thursday ratcheted up pressure on Israel to freeze settlements as he sought to reassure visiting Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas of U.S. support for Palestinian statehood.




Hoping to revive stalled peace efforts, Obama held White House talks with Abbas 10 days after hosting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who remains at odds with Israel's superpower ally over Jewish settlements and Palestinian statehood.

Obama made clear that he would continue to push Netanyahu, who has dismayed Washington and the Palestinians with his resistance to calls for a total freeze on settlement construction in the occupied West Bank.



"I'm a strong believer in a two-state solution," Obama told reporters with Abbas, a Western-backed moderate weakened by Hamas Islamist control of the Gaza Strip, seated at his side.

Obama stressed that Israel's obligation under a 2003 Middle East peace "road map" includes "stopping settlements and making sure that there is a viable Palestinian state." He said the Palestinians had to make more progress in improving their security forces and reducing anti-Israel "incitement."

In his first Washington visit since Obama took office in January, Abbas had been expected to make his case for a tougher U.S. approach toward Netanyahu, who heads a new right-leaning Israeli coalition with pro-settler parties at its core.

Netanyahu's government on Thursday spurned U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's blunt assertion that all settlement activity must stop, including the "natural growth" of existing enclaves that Netanyahu has vowed to continue.

Israeli government spokesman Mark Regev responded by reaffirming Netanyahu's intention to allow some further construction to accommodate the expansion of settler families.

Even as policy differences have exposed a rare U.S.-Israeli rift, it remains unclear how hard Obama is willing to push the Jewish state to make concessions when his administration has yet to complete its Middle East strategy.

Obama sees engagement in Palestinian-Israeli peacemaking as crucial to repairing America's image in the Muslim world and drawing moderate Arab states into a united front against Iran.

Grizzly Polar = Polar Bear + Brown Bear

Also known as Grolar Bear, this bear hybrid is a rare ursid hybrid that has occurred both in captivity and in the wild. In 2006, the occurrence of this hybrid in nature was confirmed by testing the DNA of a strange-looking bear that had been shot on Banks Island in the Canadian arctic.

A number of polar bear hybrids are described as Ursid hybrids, a term that designates any hybrid of two species within the Ursidae family. Polar bear hybrids with Grizzly bears have been reported and shot, but DNA techniques were not available to verify the bears' ancestry.

Blood parrot = Midas Cichild + Red Devil fish

The Blood parrot (also known as bloody parrot and blood parrotfish) is a hybrid cichlid. The fish was first created in Taiwan in around 1986. Its parentage is unknown, but the most commonly speculated pairings are midas cichlid with the redhead cichlid. This hybrid cichlid has various anatomical deformities, one of the most obvious, and also deadly, deformities is its mouth, which only has very narrow vertical opening. This makes blood parrot very hard to feed. Many die eventually because of this. Cichlid enthusiasts have called for their removal from the market and organized boycotts against pet stores that sell them.

Cama = Camel + Llama

This hybrid animal, the product of breeding a llama and a camel, has been the only creature of this kind since her birth in 1995. Camas are humpless and have the long fluffy coat of a llama. Their ears are half way in length between camels and llamas, but they have the strong, desert-ready legs of a camel.

Beefalo = Buffalo + Cow

What do you get when you cross a cow with a buffalo? The Beefalo, a hybrid animal that produces red meat lower in fat and cholesterol than beef. Most consumers have never heard of beefalo, let alone tasted it, and only a few Seattle grocery stores carry it.

How does a buffalo burger compare to a beef one? "It has a richer flavor and it's milder and sweeter than beef," says Ellensburg beefalo breeder Mark Merril, "and more juicy."
