The PlayStation Portable notched up almost 60,000 unit sales in Japan for the week ending March 8, according to data from Media Create.

That was up hugely on the previous week's number of 35,500 with the launch of new colours in the territory, beating the Nintendo DS into second place on a combined Lite and DSi total of 43,000.

The PlayStation 3 saw a 10 per cent sales rise week-on-week to hit just under 40,000 while the Wii continued to fall back, selling fewer than 17,000 units.

The Xbox 360 jumped to 15,000, while the PlayStation 2 recorded just under 5000 sales.

The full hardware chart is as follows:

* 1. PlayStation Portable: 59,568
* 2. Nintendo DS: 43,342
* 3. PlayStation 3: 39,835
* 4. Nintendo Wii: 16,560
* 5. Xbox 360: 14,994
* 6. PlayStation 2: 4954
