The Most Cruel Crime Ever Happen

Austrian pensioner guilty of rape, incest and murder

“I grew up in a poor family. My father was a no-good scoundrel who always cheated on her and my mother threw him out of the house when I was four – and she was quite right to do so.

“After that, it was only the two of us.

“My mama was a strong woman. She taught me discipline, order and diligence. She enabled me good education and job training and she constantly worked hard and would take difficult jobs only to support the both of us.

“She was as strict as it was necessary. She was the best woman in the world. And I was her husband, in some way. She was the boss at home, but I was the only man in the house."

When asked whether he was sexually abused by his mother, he said: “No, never. My mother was decent, most decent. I loved her over everything.

“I have admired her. I admired her very much. But I have naturally not done anything. There was nothing there."

When asked whether there were any fantasies about her mother, he said: “Yes, probably, but I was strong, almost as strong as my mother, and I have therefore managed to suppress my urges.

“Later, I got older and I started going out and I had several amorous affairs. And than I found Rosemarie.

“She had nothing in common with my mother. But, however, there were some similarities.

“She was also wonderful, but wonderful in a different ways. She was much more shy and weaker than my mother.

“I always wanted to have many children. Not children that would have to, like I had, grow up alone, but children that would always have someone to play with. I had a dream about a large family ever since I was a little boy.

“And Rosemarie appeared to be a suitable mother. That motive [for marrying her] was not a bad one. And it is true: I always loved her and I will always love her."

When asked what happened when he raped a woman in 1967, he said: “I don’t know what came into me.

“But this is also true: I always wanted to be a good husband and father.

“I admit I have always valued decency and good behaviour. I grew up in the Nazi era and strictness and discipline were very important then. I have probably subconsciously picked up some of that, which is only normal.

“But I am not the beast the media make me to be."

When asked what he would think of a man like himself, he said: “Seen form the outside – I would probably think he was a beast or a monster."

He rejected the claims, made by his daughter Elisabeth, that he started abusing her when she was 11, and said: “That is not true. I am not a man who would molest children.

"It only started later, much later, when she was already underneath."

He also admitted to having planned the crime for a long period of time: “It was approximately two, three years before. It must have been 1981 or 1982 when I started to turn a room in my cellar into a cell. I brought in a heavy door of steel and concrete and equipped it with a remote-controlled electrical motor, which would open it only after a numeric code was entered.

“I isolated the whole bunker to become sound-proof. I installed a wash basin, a toilet, a bed, a cooker and a refrigerator. Electricity and light were already installed.

“Perhaps someone noticed the construction works. But it would have not made any difference, whether they did or not. The cellar of my house belonged to me and to me alone, it was my kingdom to which only I had access to. Everyone who lived there knew that. My wife, my children, my lodgers. And no-one would have dared to enter my realm or even to ask me what I was doing there.

“I told everyone that my office was there, full of private files that were my business alone and that was enough – everyone adhered to my rules.

Speaking about Elisabeth, he said: “Ever since she entered puberty she did not adhere to any rules any more, she would spend whole nights in dingy bars, drinking alcohol and smoking. I only tried to pull her out of that misery. I got her a job as a waitress but she would not go to work for days. She even escaped twice and hung out with bad people during this time and they were not a good company for her. I would bring her back home each time, but she would try to escape again.

“That is why I had to do something; I had to create a place where I could keep Elisabeth, by force if necessary, away from the outside world.”

He denied handcuffing her or keeping her on a dog leash, as she told police, and said: “That would not have been necessary. My daughter had no chance of escape. It was a vicious circle, a circle from which there was no exit – not only for Elisabeth, but also for myself.

“With every passing week in which I kept my daughter captive my situation was getting crazier. I really was thinking about whether I should let her go or not. But I was not able to make that decision, although - or maybe exactly because of that - I knew that with every passing day what I had done would be more severely judged.

“But I was afraid of being arrested and of having my family and everyone out there find out about my crime – and so I postponed my decision again and again. Until one day it was really too late to free Elisabeth and take her upstairs.”

He said he then begun to compare his daughter to his mother: “But the urge have sex with Elisabeth was growing stronger and stronger.

“I knew that Elisabeth did not want the things I did to her. I knew that I was hurting her.

“But the urge to finally be able to taste the forbidden fruit was too strong. It was like an addiction.

“In reality, I wanted to have children with her.

“Elisabeth naturally had fear of giving birth but I brought her medical books to the cellar, so she could prepare for the Day X. I brought her towels, disinfectants and nappies.

“I was looking forward to the offspring. It was a beautiful idea for me, to have a proper family, also down in the cellar, with a good wife and a couple of children.

“I made preparations for all possibilities. Every time I left the bunker, I would activate a time lock, which would make sure that the doors to the dungeon would open if I would not return after a certain period of time.

“Had I died, Elisabeth and the children would have been freed."

”After [the youngest boy] was born at the end of 2002 I even gave Elizabeth a washing machine so that she could wash the clothes and bed sheets of the children and not have to hand wash them in the basin.

”I always knew during the whole 24 years that what I was doing was not right that I must have been crazy to do such a thing, but still it became a normal occurrence to lead a second life in the cellar of my house.”

When asked about whether he saw his captives as a second family he said: “It was exactly that was the case.”

He also said that Elizabeth never told the children that they were a product of incestuous relationship. The children in the dungeon always had to call him grandpa.

He said: ”Elizabeth has always taken care of things for the sake of the family.

”I have tried to provide for my family in the cellar as best as possible. Whenever I went to the bunker I would bring my daughter flowers and cuddly toys as well as books for the children. I would watch an adventure film on video with them while Elizabeth would prepare our favourite food and then we would all sit together at the kitchen table and eat together.”

He also said that the children were often suffering from infections, coughing attacks, chest pain and epileptic attacks.

He claimed he planned to integrate his dungeon family into his upstairs family.

He said: “I wanted to take Elizabeth, [and the children] to my home. I have grown old in the meantime, I was not so agile anymore and I simply knew that in the near future I would not have been able to provide for my second family in the bunker.

"Elizabeth and the children were supposed to tell the story that they had been at a secret location with a cult until they were set free.”

He also said that he hoped to be able to get away with his crime.

”Of course this is what I hoped for even if that hope was weak. There was always the danger that Elizabeth and the children could have betrayed me but I accepted that risk and I have done that as the tragedy [with the oldest daughter] escalated.”

Speaking of the oldest girl's illness he said: “She tore the clothes from her body and threw them in the toilet.”

When asked how did he manage to prevent his daughter and her children from escaping he said: “It was not difficult. I did not need to use physical violence. Elizabeth and the children fully accepted me as the supreme head of the family, they would have never dared to attack me.

"Apart from that they also knew that I was the only one who had the numeric code for the remote control that could open and close the doors to the dungeon.”

When asked about whether he threatened them with gas poisoning if they attempted to escape he said: “I have only explained to them that they should not fiddle with the dungeon door or else they could receive an electrical shock and die.”

When asked whether he now was looking forward to death he said: “No, I only want redemption.”

Insurance man shot repeatedly at close range

SEREMBAN: An insurance agent was shot 10 times at close range in front of his house in Taman Desa Beringin, Sikamat while he was about to drive to the market yesterday.

The Proton Gen 2 car belonging to B. Sivaneswaran (below) that crashed into a Proton Wira as he was trying to get away after he was shot.

In the 5pm incident, B. Sivaneswaran, 40, died on the spot after being hit by 10 of the 14 shots fired by one of two men in a silver Honda Civic, with fake registration number plates.

State police chief Datuk Osman Salleh said prior to the incident, the two suspects were seen outside the victim's house, waiting for him to come out.

"When the suspects saw the victim coming out of his house and getting into his Proton Gen 2, they drove towards him and fired several shots.

"The victim tried to escape by reversing his car.
"Unfortunately, the victim crashed into another car parked behind and the suspects took the opportunity to get out of their car and walk towards the victim and shot at him," he said when met at the scene.

Osman said initial investigations revealed that 14 shots were fired from a 9mm semi-automatic pistol, of which 10 shots hit the victim, especially on his right side.

"Efforts to track down the suspects are already ongoing, including getting a description from witnesses since the suspects were not wearing masks. We are not ruling out the possibility that the suspects were hired killers," he added.

Lecturer raped me, alleges student

SERDANG: A lecturer at a public university here stands accused of raping one of his charges.
The lecturer, from the engineering faculty, is said to have threatened to expel the 26-year-old student from Bandar Tasik Selatan if she told anyone about the rape. He also allegedly offered to make her his third wife.

The student lodged a report last week alleging rape and molest.

Her ordeal began at the end of last year when she was told to meet the lecturer in his office. She was supposed to hand in her assignment.

"She went to the lecturer's office and handed her assignment. She was told to wait while he browsed through the work," said a source.
"The student then told him this would be their last meeting as she had completed all her assignments. She thanked him for his help and guidance."

The lecturer then locked the door and hugged and kissed the student who tried to push him off.

He allegedly took out a sleeping bag from a cupboard, grabbed the student and pushed her onto to the floor. The victim screamed for help but was gagged.

After allegedly raping her, the lecturer warned the student not to inform anyone about the incident or he would not only smear her name but also get her expelled.

"The victim claimed that the lecturer offered to make her his third wife. But she refused despite his persistence. She was molested and raped on two other occasions," the source disclosed.

Selangor CID chief Senior Assistant Commissioner II Hasnan Hassan said police would question the lecturer when he returned from his holiday abroad.

15 iPhone 3.0 features we'd like to see

If you have an iphone, what the feature that you would like to see in your iphone. Here i list several feature that i would like to see on my iphone.

Systemwide cut/copy/paste

It’s been arguably the most requested feature of the iPhone OS since day one. Apple’s tried to predict where people would want to use copy-and-paste and provide suitable workarounds, like being able to mail links from Safari. But anyone who’s ever had to transfer a scrap of arbitrary text between two applications (taking a quote from a Web page to Mail, for example) has eventually had to resort to the poor man’s copy-and-paste: jotting a note down on a piece of paper and then laboriously typing it back in. It’s time to finally bring the iPhone’s capabilities up to par with the 1984’s Mac OS in this department.

Push notifications and/or background apps

At Apple’s 2008 Worldwide Developer Conference, the company touted a push notification system that would allow third-party iPhone apps to alert users. However, the feature disappeared from the face of the Earth. Even if that particular implementation doesn’t make it into iPhone 3.0, it seems likely that Apple will introduce some sort of notification system. The company may even go so far as to loosen up the restrictions on applications running in the background, which would greatly benefit programs like music players, macro utilities, GPS data loggers, and instant-messaging clients. Again, it may be a case of history repeating itself: remember, the original Mac OS ran just one program for the first several years of its existence too.

Landscape mode in every Apple app

Viewing your screen horizontally is available on many third-party apps for the iPhone, but landscape mode is only available on three Apple applications: Safari, YouTube, and iPod. There are a number of advantages to having landscape mode available in all apps. For example, the text and images are significantly larger when viewed in landscape. That’s advantageous for the accuracy of double-tapping on text and images, as well as making the experience more enjoyable if your eyesight isn’t what it used to be. The keyboard is also much larger in landscape mode, which helps those of us with big mitts to make less mistakes when typing. The larger layout gives Apple the opportunity to add more speciality keys too, like the .com button used in Safari. Having landscape is just one of those things you figure a device like the iPhone should naturally have.—JD

Improvements to Mail

In many ways, the iPhone’s Mail program is the best mobile e-mail client out there. But it’s also missing a good number of obvious features, especially for heavy e-mail users. For example, if you’ve got multiple e-mail accounts, it currently takes three taps just to read a message in your Inbox, then three more to get back to the accounts list. Stretch that across three, four, or more e-mail accounts, and Mail can be maddeningly frustrating to use. An option for a single, unified Inbox—as exists in the desktop version of Mail—would ease the tap-heavy task of checking new messages.

Similarly, marking existing messages as read makes it easier to keep track of how many new messages—received since you last browsed your Inbox—are waiting. But Mail currently requires you to view each messages individually to mark it as read. Now that the iPhone finally provides the capability to delete messages en masse, we’d like to see similar features for marking mail as read and moving mail to folders. (Even better, make it easier to apply these actions to everything: give us Delete All and Mark All As Read buttons.)

We’d also like to see the capability to e-mail more than one photo at a time, as well as more options for replying, including a choice of what text to quote and whether replies should go at the top or bottom of the message.

Sync notes and to-dos

There are a plethora of to-do list and note apps for the iPhone, largely because Apple seems to have abdicated its responsibility in these areas. iCal, which the iPhone already syncs with, offers To-Do lists. So why doesn’t the iPhone have to-do list support built in, allowing to-dos to sync back and forth between your computer and your iPhone? And then there are notes. The iPhone’s built-in Notes app is handy for jotting things down, but none of the notes you write can sync with your Mac. Third-party apps have come up with numerous ways to sync notes back to your Mac, but none would be as elegant as having the notes sync automatically the next time you attached your iPhone and synced via iTunes.—JS

Better app organization

Back when the iPhone had only 20 apps—all from Apple—its one-panel home screen was a simple and easy-to-use way to launch those apps. But with the success of the App Store, many iPhone owners now have many more apps. While the flick-to-see-another-screen approach works when your app collection is small, once you pass two screens’ worth—and with so many free and inexpensive apps, it’s easy to do so—the current interface breaks down. For heavy users of the App Store, the iPhone needs a better way of organizing apps. One approach might be to let you name each screen or category of apps, and then provide a pop-up menu for switching directly to a

particular screen.

Similarly, if you want to reorganize your apps—for example, putting all games on one screen, all productivity apps on another, and so on—the current method, dragging icons from screen to screen, can be downright painful. We’re hoping for a better way to decide what goes where. Perhaps a Settings screen on the iPhone itself that lists each app and lets you choose the screen on which it should appear. (Palm handhelds had such a feature back in the 90s.) Another option would be a way to manage apps from within iTunes; this user-created video includes a number of great ideas.—DF

Customizable tones

You’ve been able to use custom ringtones since iTunes 7.4 was released in September 2007. But that’s the only sound you can configure—alerts for calendar events, alarms, and new e-mail, voicemail, and SMS messages are set in stone. Audible alerts are most useful when you know instantly what each sound means, so we’d like to be able to pick our favorite for each, from Apple’s selection of sounds or from sounds we’ve added ourselves. (And is it too much to ask to be able to pick a song from our iTunes library and use it as an alert, without buying a ringtone or chopping the file up ourselves in GarageBand?)—DF

Full Bluetooth support

The iPhone includes Bluetooth, but only for using wireless phone headsets. Yet Bluetooth can do so much more. For example, if Apple were to allow the full range of Bluetooth capabilities, we could stream audio wirelessly to Bluetooth-equipped audio systems and headphones; use Bluetooth keyboards (including Apple’s own) for larger text-editing tasks; and sync the iPhone’s address book with the advanced automobile communication systems that are more and more common these days. C’mon, Apple. Set
Bluetooth free.—DF

MMS

Any iPhone user who’s ever received a picture message from a friend’s phone or tried to send one has probably found themselves bemused by what should be a seemingly simple task. Despite being an incredibly “smart” phone in many contexts, multimedia messaging is one arena where the iPhone falls behind even the cheapest phones on offer from most carriers. Yes, MMS (short for Multimedia Messaging Service) is a money-making bonanza for cell-phone carriers and we’d all be better off being able to e-mail pictures to each other, but until that day arrives, at least give us the option to spend our money unwisely.—DM

Video capture

While it’d be nice if the iPhone featured a higher-resolution camera and a built-in flash, both of those things will require new hardware. Video capture, however, could be added to existing iPhones via new software. As proof, there’s already a third-party application called iPhone Video Recorder—available for jailbroken iPhones—that allows for up to 15fps video capture using the built-in camera on any iPhone.—RG

Turn-by-turn directions

The iPhone helps you avoid having to carry around several gadgets all the time, like an iPod, a phone, or a camera. But one device it can’t quite replace yet is your car’s GPS unit. The iPhone 3G’s GPS features bring the possibility tantalizingly close, but the lack of automatic route recalculation, turn-by-turn directions, and voice prompts make it a no-go. An official app from Apple, or a deal with an established GPS company like TomTom or Garmin to produce a sanctioned third-party program could help the iPhone finally find its direction in this department.—DM

Application data sharing and syncing

There are tens of thousands of iPhone apps out there these days, but each of them is an island unto itself: apps can’t talk to other apps or share data among themselves. App developers also can’t hook into an iTunes sync and use it transfer data to and from the iPhone. Right now we see app developers trying all sorts of workarounds to address this issue, from web servers to FTP servers to direct connections via Wi-Fi to companion apps that run on the desktop. Apple should allow apps to transfer data via iTunes and give them the ability to share data with other apps when necessary. Imagine being able to receive an e-mail attachment, save it, and then open it with a program designed to edit it, for example. All of these iPhone apps are great—just imagine how great they’d be if they could talk to each other, too.—RG

Spotlight for iPhone

If you want to search on the iPhone, you can—if what you want to search is your own contacts list. If you can’t quite remember which e-mail message had your friend’s phone number in it or which week in October you have a dentist’s appointment or the name of the rep for a company you work with, you’re out of luck. Which is why it’s time for the iPhone to get a phone-wide search feature, one that will trawl through any data that an app has deemed searchable—and yes, that means third-party apps too—and bring you back a list of results.—JS

Share Internet with a Mac or PC

As good as the iPhone’s Web browser is, many people would rather surf the Web on their laptop. More important, there are plenty of Internet-required tasks you can’t complete on your iPhone because they require an application on your computer. Many mobile phones provide the capability to use the phone as a modem for your computer; that would be a nice option to have with the iPhone, even if there’s an additional fee we have to pay to AT&T for the privilege. Anyone who’s desperately needed to get their laptop on the Internet while knowing their iPhone’s already got a connection knows what we’re talking about.—JD

Voice dialing

Voice dialing, the ability to say the name of the contact and have the phone call them, is another of those features that many cheaper handsets have but the iPhone surprisingly lacks. It seems like it would be a natural fit, given that the iPhone’s touchscreen interface, with its lack of tactile feedback, is impossible to dial without looking—making it extremely dangerous to operate while driving and virtually impossible for vision-impaired users.

Apple’s clearly spent time developing voice recognition for the Mac OS that would not only seem to lend itself well to the iPhone, but is also probably a lot better than what you find on those cheap phones. Its absence to date leads us to suspect that it’s one of those features Apple doesn’t want to implement until they can do it right. Let’s hope its time has arrived.

SLITHERY 'HITCHHIKER': A King Cobra was caught after it tried to ’hitch’ a ride in a car belonging to a villager in Kampung Tiram, Kuantan, on Saturday night. In the 11pm incident, a group of teenagers,

A Civil Defence team later found the 30kg snake coiled around the engine. A spokesman said the snake could have gotten lost and it would be released into the jungle.

In the semi-final played early today, Chong Wei, the tournament's first seed, took 51 minutes to overcome an unseeded but stubborn Danish, Jan O. Jorgensen.

Chong Wei won the first set 21-12, lost the second 20-22 but regain the rhythm that made him a world class player in the rubber set, sending the Danish home with a parting 21-9 thrashing.

The victory put Chong Wei on the path of Lin Dan, the fiery Chinese shuttler who beat him at the All England a week ago.
Lin Dan is no match for countryman and third-seeded Chen Jin who bowed out 13-21 and 14-21 in 44 minutes in the other semi-final match.

Lin Dan denied Chong Wei the All England title on March 8 in straight sets of 21-19, 21-12.

"Race to Witch Mountain" takes first at box office

"Race to Witch Mountain" opens at #1 with $25 million

"Watchmen" drops, taking in $18.1 million (Adds comments, details)

LOS ANGELES, March 15 (Reuters) - The Disney family adventure "Race to Witch Mountain" outran superhero movie "Watchmen" to take the top spot with $25 million in this weekend's contest at the North American box office.

The reworking of the 1975 action adventure "Escape to Witch Mountain" stars Dwayne ("The Rock") Johnson, who also headlined Disney's "The Game Plan."

"We had a big family audience, but about 20 percent of the audience was unaccompanied adults," said Mark Zoradi, president of the studios motion pictures group at Walt Disney Co (DIS.N). "There was a little bit of people looking back toward the first movie."

He declined to make overall projections for "Witch Mountain" but said, with schools out for spring break over the next few weeks, it looks to be "in for a good solid run."

"Watchmen," an adaptation of a cult comic book series, saw its weekend box office take fall 67 percent from a week earlier to $18.1 million, distributor Warner Bros Pictures said.

The drop was in line with expectations and similar to the one after openings of other "tent-pole" movies, said Jeff Goldstein, executive vice president and general sales manager of domestic distribution at the studio owned by Time Warner Inc (TWX.N).

He said the studio believes "Watchmen" has "tremendous staying power" and will make a projection for overall receipts next week.

The film's take for its first two weeks was $86 million.

The debut of horror film remake "The Last House on the Left" came in No. 3 for the weekend with $14.7 million.

Produced by Rogue Pictures/Universal Pictures, the film stars Tony Goldwyn and Monica Potter in a refashioning of Wes Craven's 1972 horror thriller.

It fell far short of the more than $40 million opening last month of another horror genre remake, "Friday the 13th."

Universal is a unit of General Electric Co's NBC Universal (GE.N). Rogue is a unit of closely held Relativity Media.

Fox's Liam Neeson thriller "Taken" slipped to No. 4 with $6.7 million in its seventh weekend. It has earned $126.8 million to date. Fox is owned by News Corp (NWSA.O).

Actor/writer/director Tyler Perry's "Madea Goes to Jail" dropped to No. 5 with $5.1 million, taking its haul to date to $83.2 million. The black-themed comedy was released by Lionsgate, a unit of Lions Gate Entertainment Corp (LGF.N).

No. 6 for the week, "Slumdog Millionaire," has so far earned $132.6 million, moving the tale of impoverished Indian orphans into the top-10 highest grossing Best Picture Oscar winners of all time, according to Sheila DeLoach, senior vice president of distribution at Fox Searchlight. Top five natural phenomena

Follow us on a tour of the world's most exciting, spectacular and unmissable natural events. From surfing on the Severn to battling bats in Zambia, Mother Nature lays on some impressive displays. Here are some of the best.

Japanese Cherry Blossoms

The arrival of cherry blossoms, known as sakura, marks the start of the hanami (flower watching) festival, which represents a new beginning for many Japanese people. Outdoor parties and picnics, with sake and karaoke, take place all over the country. The flowers epitomise a Japanese aesthetic of delicate beauty and are a must on any spring trip to Japan.

Where?
Ueno Park, Tokyo and Maruyama Park, Kyoto are popular viewing spots.

When?
The blossoms open throughout the country in March and April but times vary according to the weather.

How?
For a detailed guide to the festival and timings of the blossom, plus more good spots to see the show, check http://www.jnto.go.jp/eng.

Aurora Borealis, the shimmering coloured patterns in the night sky caused by electrically charged particles, are one of the most bewitching spectacles you can witness. Notoriously shy, you need to be prepared for disappointment. Follow our guide to spotting them, though, and there's a good chance you could see what the Algonquin Indians believed to be their ancestors dancing around ceremonial fires.

Where?
Norway, Iceland, Canada, Alaska, Greenland, Lapland. In short, the further north the better, though they have been seen as far south as Scotland.

When?
Between November and February, although they can be seen as early as late August and as late as mid April.

How?
Get away from areas with light pollution - the more rural the better.

Stay for a while; your chances of seeing them will increase and once the aurora appears it tends to stay for more than one day.

Contact your destination beforehand to check for the darkest nights and likelihood of the lights appearing.

Try to combine the lights with another activity. That way, if they don't appear, you won't be too disappointed.

Northern Lights Holidays offers tailored cruises in the Norwegian fjords to see the aurora, as does Voyages Jules Verne.

BAM's strength is only in numbers

CHINA has been dominating the badminton world for several decades but its startling revelation that it has less than 1,000 registered shuttlers is food for thought.

The lack of talent in a country with more than 1 billion population is a scary thought and one wonders where that leaves Malaysia, which only has 26 million to look for talent from.

The Chinese Badminton Association (CBA) revealed the facts during the All England last week, which came before China swept all five titles for the first time while Malaysia's best effort was a runner-up finish by Lee Chong Wei.

In order to tackle the problem, CBA has planned a professional domestic league and has even cautioned that its top players will only compete in selected Super Series and grand pix events, which will give the Badminton World Federation (BWF) a headache.

But what about the BA of Malaysia's situation?
Although Malaysia's total number is marginally better (see graphic) than China's as there are 1,153 active players ranging from the Under-12 category to senior level.

The quality, though, is a different story.

The national squad has a total of 63 players consisting 11 elite shuttlers, 16 elite back-up and 36 back-up shuttlers.

Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS), the home of the national juniors, has 74 players.

Among the states, Kedah, which can claim to have the best programme, has the highest number at 97 and this is followed closely by Johor which has 95.

Perak and Malacca have 89 each while Pahang and Kuala Lumpur have 82 players each.

Selangor and Penang have 80 each while Perlis and Sabah both have 61, Negri Sembilan 76 and Sarawak 65.

Kelantan have 30 active players while Terengganu have the lowest number at 29.

Despite the numbers, Malaysia only have Chong Wei as a world class performer in the men's singles while back-up shuttlers Chong Wei Feng, Liew Daren, Arif Latif, Kuan Beng Hong and Tan Chun Seang are struggling to qualify for the main draw of Super Series tournaments.

The situation in the women's categories is worse as in the singles, Wong Mew Choo is injury prone and retirement not far away while Julia Wong and Lydia Cheah are struggling to even match the Japanese and South Koreans.

The women's doubles is in an even more bleak situation as there is nothing after Wong Pei Tty-Chin Eei Hui.

Why BAM is in this situation, despite having a good structure in place, is because the existing mechanism has to be reviewed.

The national senior circuit comprises just two legs and a grand prix finals and this hardly acts as encouragement to players, especially at the state level.

The two-division format has also not helped as state players avoid division one which is dominated by national players.

However, playing in division two has also not helped as this is dominated by players from Bukit Jalil.

The situation is even more drastic in the women's events as the singles sometimes just attracts six players, a situation which is also repeated in the doubles.

The mixed doubles is normally a national team affair with an occasional pair from the states.

There is an urgent need to improve the national circuit and BAM, which tends to blame the international calendar for not paying due attention, must consider following China.

The national players should be compelled to play in the local circuit and compete in selected international events as this will have a two-pronged effect.

The national circuit will see renewed interest and players will also be able to maintain their international competitiveness.

A case in point has to be China's Olympic champion Lin Dan, who won the All England last week and is going great guns in the Swiss Open, this after staying away for three months.

What is alarming is that the national junior circuit, which is run on a zonal format, is also suffering from a lack of participation.

The south zone leg in Malacca last month had less than eight players in the girls' categories and only four pairs in the Under-18.

This could be because parents are more interested in their children pursuing academic excellence, which is also China's problem.

China have, till this point, managed to overcome this by having successful sports schools but the ones in Malaysia can't claim to have a high success rate.

The states too have to share the blame, for despite the number of registered players they have, the quality is nothing worth shouting about.

The states have to make it attractive for players and one such way is by having quality coaches, which should not be a problem given Malaysia's history in the sport.

However, former players prefer to go into private coaching as the returns are higher and if the states want to attract them, they should work with BAM and devise a package which will make it worthwhile for someone to contemplate working with them.

BAM and the states must also not be overly worried about clubs for they have a role to play and Indonesia is a classic example.

Badminton in Malaysia may not be in the dire straits that football is but if China can be worried, then it only makes sense for BAM to take stock of the situation before it is too late.

An iPhone 3.0 software wish list

As iPhone owners await Tuesday's announcement of the iPhone 3.0 software, the Web is abuzz with speculation about what new features the update will bring. Of course, we couldn't let this opportunity pass without chiming in as well.

Ever since the first iPhone was born more than two years ago, and following the introduction of the iPhone 3G last summer, we've made no secret that the iPhone lacks many features we think it should have. We've blogged a few times detailing our complaints, but here you can find a full list in no particular order.

We've also browsed through your blog comments and e-mails to see the features that you hope to see. And please feel free to add anything that we've missed.

Multimedia messaging - A very basic feature that every other cell phone has. Yet, the good news is that it appears to be a done deal. It's about time.

Tethering
- From our perspective there hasn't been a huge cry from CNET readers for this feature, but it looks like we're going to get it.

Cut and paste - A no-brainer, and one we get from many CNET readers.

Text forwarding
- Another basic feature that every other cell phone has.

A landscape keyboard - It works when using the Web browser, so why not when composing a message or e-mail? There is an app for brings this functionality, but we don't think that we should have to pay extra to get it--even if it is 99 cents.

Voice dialing/speed dialing
- We know there are apps, but why should you have to pay for functionality that almost every other cell phones has? Sneaky Apple.

Real time turn-by-turn directions - This may take a new iPhone, but we're going to throw it in here anyway.

Task manager/background processing - CNET readers have been divided on this feature, but we'd like the ability to toggle between running applications.

Video recording/more camera options - Yet another feature many basic phones offer. And here again, we don't think that an app cuts it. We'd also like to have more creative control within the camera though options like a digital zoom, a self-timer and a brightness meter.

Full search - We'd like this for e-mails, calendar items and contacts all in one convenient place. There are a few apps that bring partial search, but Apple's SDK currently prohibits apps with calendar searching.

Send appointments to contacts - While we're on the calendar, we shouldn't have to wait until we're back on our computer to send meeting invites.

Weekly calendar view - This is a small point, but it's one worth mentioning.

Resend option for text messaging
- As reader michaels1715 said, "Sometimes I want to repeat myself, but I don't want to have to type it all over again!"

File transfer/mass storage - If you don't buy an app, you can only transfer files to the iPhone using iTunes. Of course, that makes it impossible to transfer third-party files or use the handset as a mass storage device.

More Bluetooth profiles - Stereo Bluetooth may not have the best sound quality, but why not offer the choice of using it. Apple could always make more cash by building a stereo Bluetooth headset. And while we're at it, a Bluetooth file transfer profile would be welcome.

Flash support - Just a thought.

Ooh, she's too hot for some...

SOME liked it, some didn't.
When Datin Seri Tiara Jacquelina made a surprise entrance at Akademi Fantasia last week, all eyes were on her killer heels, protruding fringe and leather jacket.

Not that they had never seen such gear before.

But given the scenario at the Akademi, where the rest of the facilitators (or "faculty" as Tiara puts it) were clad in simple jeans and T-shirt or baju kurung, Tiara was considered a little over-dressed.

Chatters on Astro 109 didn't let it go unnoticed.
Some even went so far as to suggest that for next year, it should invite hot numbers like Azizah Mahzan, whose sexy attire has created havoc, and Rosnah Mat Aris, the actress often in hot water.... FOR WHAT? -- To be the principal!

One even said that comedian Mr Os is way better than Tiara.

Well, what can we say? This is definitely one business where you can't please everyone...
